| Vittorio Adorni with Help from His Friends
The 1968 World Road Race Championship was held in Imola, Italy. The race presented 277.4 km over a difficult 18 laps of a 15.41 km circuit.
Early in the race Vittorio Adorni (Ita), Rik van Looy (Bel) and Joaquim Agostinho (Por) formed the breakaway group. The group was working well together and built a solid lead. Adorni, a strong time trailer, need to drop superior sprint Van Looy to have a chance of winning.
With 90 km (5 and a half laps) to go Adorni attacked and broke away alone. Slowly his lead grew to almost 10 minutes as Vittorio Adorni rolled into the finish in Imola to gain the 1968 World Road Race Championship. The huge Italian crowd cheered wildly for the Italian victory.
